i am thankful that i can feel the cold hardwood floors against my skin
as i lay on the kitchen floor
and feel the warm sun streaming through the windows
and landing on my thin shoulder bones
and settling into the curls of my hair.
like a golden honey massaging into my soul.
i am thankful i can hear my mama humming old hymns quietly to herself
while her hands rest in the soapy dishwater.
and her diamond ring glitters
reflecting onto the white dishes
clanking in the deep sink.
i am thankful i can smell the fresh morning.
the way the newly folded laundry melts together
with the smell of my little sister's lavender bubble bath
and daddy's 6 a.m. black coffee.
i am thankful i can breathe in deep and unravel the world around me
piece by piece.

ive been reading the journal of this girl whose entire body got 3rd degree burns and watching her reach for a hope-filled recovery.
but reading her descriptions and depictions of days has really made me
so grateful
for this body i have.
now i love to watch my fingers move and the skin stretch over the bones.
i love to take deep breaths and let the cool air fill my lungs.
i love to stretch my arms out in front of me and watch how fluidly they connect gracefully one movement with the next.
i love how i can see my eyelashes if i blink really fast and feel the way my eyelids cover my dusty blue eyes.

this girl is almost trapped in her own body.
each movement brings pain.
and even more than that, the memory of how life once was.
life with a healthy, clean, fully alive and fully functioning body.
now she spends sleepless nights in pain and long still days of aching for hope.
its almost like she pressed pause on life
because she didnt have a healthy body to carry her through it.
so it really made happy to watch the way my body moved so naturally.
the way it twirled around so effortlessly.
the way my fingers touched my toes and my curls brushed against my shoulders.
i am so thankful to be in this body.
to have the chance to live here.
to be able to use every last breath of this earthly body in worship of something bigger than me.
in worship of the One who created each and every thing my eyes dance across.
in worship of the One who holds my heart in his hand.
...using every last breath of this body in eager anticipation of heaven.

Give a girl Photoshop...

Give a girl Photoshop...

...and you give her a clean complexion.
This is one of Aidan's shots. He also took one of my butt-- didn't think you'd like to see that. Needless to say, in the original photo I am sans makeup. Pre-digital-camera-Maggie would never have allowed this photo to be taken. Not to worry! Once everone is asleep, the "Healing Brush" tool (looks like a Band-Aid -- how appropos) works its Photoshop magic and there's nary a pimple or a pore to be seen!
