Peel lines, or Bubble Maths

Peel lines, or Bubble Maths

This is a soap bubble reflecting me and the hedge behind me. The reflections are really interesting - they're split nicely into two parts.

OK, let me try to explain. The hedges in my garden are lit brightly on top, which you can see from the hedge in front. Inside the bubble you can see the reflection of the hedge that is behind me. The top of the hedge, I think, runs horizontally through the middle of the bubble. It's actually like an ellipse there. But then follow it to the left or right, and you will see those lines curve tightly up and down. It's like watching reality peeling away, up and down. Pretty cool. I'll tag this with maths tags, because it must be exciting for people who are interested in curves and maths.

I've added some notes to try to show you the curves. But I'm no mathematician, so please have a go at explaining this phenomena yourself. (Hover the cursor over the photo to see my notes).

I have photographed a lot of bubbles, but the lines of the hedge in this shot help me to see the nature of the double reflections, i.e. I can see their shapes. I think that sometimes one of those reflections is more in focus than the other, and that depends on where the camera focusses. I think it's quite simple in that way, but when people ask me how I photograph bubbles, I end up trying to explain lots of these things, and it seems quite complicated as a whole.

P.S. There are hedges in front and behind this bubble. The reflection in the bubble is from the hedge behind, which has its whole front lit up.

What used to be a rail line meets a rail line

What used to be a rail line meets a rail line

Well I just spent two hours hoping to take photos of a train, as one went by earlier to dump off grain hoppers in Saskatchewan, after several hours of waiting, I decided to stop waiting for the train to come by. That and there was a thunderstorm heading my way from the Southeast.

Here's a photo of what used to be a rail line, it's still a bit of a hill, the rail line (CN) was abandoned back a few decades ago, but there's still a rail line right next to it (CP). I remember being 4-5 years old, and having a marshmallow roast in the summer and hearing the horn of the train blare as it goes by. For several years that sound was basically non existent, but for the last few years the sound has returned to the prairies, and I've wanted to get a photo of a train while I still could, as that rail line could be one day non-existant too (even though currently one of the biggest cash cows for the railroads is.. GRAIN!)
