River of Smoke: A Novel

River of Smoke: A Novel

The Ibis, loaded to its gunwales with a cargo of indentured servants, is in the grip of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal; among the dozens flailing for survival are Neel, the pampered raja who has been convicted of embezzlement; Paulette, the French orphan masquerading as a deck-hand; and Deeti, the widowed poppy grower fleeing her homeland with her lover, Kalua.

The storm also threatens the clipper ship Anahita, groaning with the largest consignment of opium ever to leave India for Canton. And the Redruth, a nursery ship, carries Frederick “Fitcher” Penrose, a horticulturist determined to track down the priceless treasures of China that are hidden in plain sight: its plants that have the power to heal, or beautify, or intoxicate. All will converge in Canton’s Fanqui-town, or Foreign Enclave: a tumultuous world unto itself where civilizations clash and sometimes fuse. It is a powder keg awaiting a spark to ignite the Opium Wars.

Spectacular coincidences, startling reversals of fortune, and tender love stories abound. But this is much more than an irresistible page-turner. The blind quest for money, the primacy of the drug trade, the concealment of base impulses behind the rhetoric of freedom: in River of Smoke the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries converge, and the result is a consuming historical novel with powerful contemporary resonance. Critics praised Sea of Poppies for its vibrant storytelling, antic humor, and rich narrative scope; now Amitav Ghosh continues the epic that has charmed and compelled readers all over the globe.

Taken at the Assembly Hall Theatre, Royal Tunbridge Wells, before a totally brilliant show, The Naked Truth, which is itself raising thousands of pounds for another truly worthy cause Breast Cancer Care as it tours the UK to rave reviews.

Please make sure you see this production before the 2011 run ends. It is hilarious yet with a serious heartfelt story and I can honestly say that more men really should be enjoying this fabulous show and in my opinion I enjoyed it far more than Calendar Girls.

It's to the credit of these fine actresses that I have never seen so much money going into buckets at the end of a charity fundraising performance.

However I would like to thank all these lovely ladies for taking a few minutes away from the dressing room to help me and starcards.org raise money for Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital. Special thanks to Julie Buckfield and her agent for making this possible.

So the ladies have, as usual signed a charity card which when framed with a the appropriate photo will be auctioned to raise funds. Fans bookmark starcards.org and watch for your idols auction to come up.

The girls kindly signed 2 cards each. Individually each actress signed a heart card so we can do individual auctions. As a group they have signed a selection of clubs so we can have one cast unique cast item for auction also.

Note the cards in this case have no special significance to the performer they are just random cards which were chosen. The one exception is Claire King's solo card.

We usually shoot signed card showing with a backed card next to it. But Claire noticed the card we had given her for the backed one was a KING. Well she rightly said I'm a King and it should go that way round.... and I couldn't agree more! The perfect choice Claire!

Once again please go and see The Naked truth and put lots of money in those buckets at the end of the show to show your appreciation for a fine show and to support Breat Cancer care in their quest to find a cure.

Here is a shot of the lovely Michelle Heaton with her signed heart card. I always take 2 shots , when possible, so Starcards.org can choose the best one to use in the final product.

Oh and if you think of Michelle as a singer rather than an actress go and see this show - she is very impressive and no not just in the pole dancing routines!

..that’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope that you don’t take it wrong.” This is the first night in so long that I’ve had to myself, and it has been amazing. Wearing my Bishop Lynch shirt, pj pants, hair up, eating veggie pizza, watching NASCAR, and well I never wear make up, so that’s not something different. (: I actually feel peaceful, and well beautiful tonight, which I haven’t said in such a long time either. This is going to be the best summer! My life is settling into place, and I couldn’t be any happier

Very explicit, raunchy sex running through a thrilling tale of bondage and humiliation.

thankful

thankful

i am thankful that i can feel the cold hardwood floors against my skin
as i lay on the kitchen floor
and feel the warm sun streaming through the windows
and landing on my thin shoulder bones
and settling into the curls of my hair.
like a golden honey massaging into my soul.
i am thankful i can hear my mama humming old hymns quietly to herself
while her hands rest in the soapy dishwater.
and her diamond ring glitters
reflecting onto the white dishes
clanking in the deep sink.
i am thankful i can smell the fresh morning.
the way the newly folded laundry melts together
with the smell of my little sister's lavender bubble bath
and daddy's 6 a.m. black coffee.
i am thankful i can breathe in deep and unravel the world around me
piece by piece.

ive been reading the journal of this girl whose entire body got 3rd degree burns and watching her reach for a hope-filled recovery.
but reading her descriptions and depictions of days has really made me
so grateful
for this body i have.
now i love to watch my fingers move and the skin stretch over the bones.
i love to take deep breaths and let the cool air fill my lungs.
i love to stretch my arms out in front of me and watch how fluidly they connect gracefully one movement with the next.
i love how i can see my eyelashes if i blink really fast and feel the way my eyelids cover my dusty blue eyes.

this girl is almost trapped in her own body.
each movement brings pain.
and even more than that, the memory of how life once was.
life with a healthy, clean, fully alive and fully functioning body.
now she spends sleepless nights in pain and long still days of aching for hope.
its almost like she pressed pause on life
because she didnt have a healthy body to carry her through it.
so it really made happy to watch the way my body moved so naturally.
the way it twirled around so effortlessly.
the way my fingers touched my toes and my curls brushed against my shoulders.
i am so thankful to be in this body.
to have the chance to live here.
to be able to use every last breath of this earthly body in worship of something bigger than me.
in worship of the One who created each and every thing my eyes dance across.
in worship of the One who holds my heart in his hand.
...using every last breath of this body in eager anticipation of heaven.

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania. What does the name mean to you? How about trich, TTM, or a trichster? Well, this photo is about Trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is a Hair Pulling Disorder. It is classified as an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). A ‘trichster’ is a person who feels the urge to pull his or her hair. If you are having hard time imaging the behaviour of Trichotillomania, then think about it as nail biting or finger cracking kind of habit. Trichsters usually don’t just pull out all their hair, rather they do it systematically one hair at a time; just like nail biting: one nail at a time.

Majority of people start pulling their hair around the age of 13 or 14, and for most they never stop. As you have probably guessed, there aren’t any chemical medications that can cure this disorder. I think there are some behavioural treatments, etc., but I can’t say much about the treatments for trich since I am not familiar with any of them. A trichster may pull one’s hair knowingly or do it automatically without giving it much thought. It is also has been noted that trichotillomania could be hereditary.

When I was around 13 years of age, that was back home (in Iraq), I went to the barber to get a hair cut. That barber was someone I knew from the neighbourhood and he was a very talented hair stylist. He was actually a very good artist who displayed his pencil drawings in his barber shop, and I used to love going through his drawings books. When I came home I looked in the mirror and saw few hairs on top of my forehead that were dangling down like it usually happens after a routine haircut and before taking a shower. I decided that they were out of place and I pulled them out—I think they were 3 to 5 hairs—and I never stopped pulling my hair until today.

You are probably wondering: that’s it? That’s how it started? Yep. And I haven’t been able to break free from it for over a dozen of years now, or had relief from it, because it is always there in one way or another.

As it turned out that both my dad and mom’s families pull their hair in a way or another. And as it happened it has almost affected the men only.

Living with trich is not fun, just like living with any addiction, or anything for that matter that controls you. And living with trich in an eastern country is even worse.

I don’t know why I took this photo or talking about trich because I have never talked to anybody about it in a personal way. Yes, family members and close people know that I pull my hair, but I had never actually talked about it to anyone except my best friend, Jesus Christ. And believe me He is more than enough. I think I took it for all the people who have trich out there and want to hear about it from others. Hearing about others’ experiences is good because we know we are not alone in what we are facing.

I’ve never talked to anybody about it for many reasons: 1) I don’t have anybody that close to me to open up to them. 2) The people that are close to me are either not interested in hearing about it, or don’t share my beliefs (at all). 3) People are scared when you talk to them about things they don’t know…and yes sadly, we, Christians more so than others.

Jesus touched the poor, the beggars, the sick, and the homeless; we, on the other hand, simply run away from them, or give them a shower before we touch them. With hearts like ours no wonder we are scared to get dirty, because our hearts are already dirty. When our Lord Jesus Christ touched the unclean He did not become unclean, but the unclean became clean. Also when Jesus healed people He made them stand up, not vice versa. (It was the demons who threw people down.) Sometimes I think I don’t deserve the title “follower of Jesus Christ”. Yes, obeying Him is very important to me, and yes I strive to live for Him and to be confirmed to His likeness. But to follow in His footsteps is a whole new level of spiritual maturity, and understanding of who He is in a much deeper and personal way. Let me ask you a quick question: how did you picture this next spiritual level, a higher step on a ladder? Well, it is not. It is stooping down to washing the feet of one person, where there is nobody else other than the two of you, on the most isolated place on earth—a person who you don’t agree with on anything.

Let me give you some little stories about trich and me. Early on when I got trich I used to mainly pull the hair of my scalp, and so one day when I went to high school a class mate (that is still back home) saw the missing hair batches and commented (not in a sarcastic, or unfriendly way, he just made a comment) saying, “You need to change your barber.” I quickly responded, “It is not his fault; I pull my hair out.” Now why is this incident important? Because my response is pretty much my attitude toward trich: it is nobody’s fault, and I have never blamed anybody for it. This is very important, because as destructive as an addictive habit can get, its negative effects won’t be even co

Immediately

Immediately

I am your typical looking Middle Eastern man. The only difference between my looks and other men is that I have Trichotillomania. I’ve had Trichotillomania for half of my life—since the age of 13. I have already talked about Trichotillomania and so this is more like Part II. The reason I am writing this is because of the big support I had gotten from people, especially trichsters, and so I feel the need to make Trichotillomania more known just because it affects the lives of many.

Trichotillomania has many negatives effects on a person such as the person might start having low self-esteem, low self-image, depression, shame, fear of being found out, fear of rejection, fear of humiliation, fear of public places, fear of relationships, feeling of despair and helplessness, feeling of being unworthy, misunderstood and uncared for. But for me one of the worst effects of Trichotillomania is actually making me hate taking pictures of myself, not because I love taking pictures of myself—I don’t—but I would love to have decent pictures of me and my nephew and two nieces for at least memories sake. Sometimes I wonder, “What if I get married one day, wouldn’t my wife or kids want to know how I looked like 10 years ago?” But for me getting married doesn’t seem like such a good idea because Trichotillomania is genetic: I simply don’t want my kids to have this terrible disorder. Beside, I don't want to make my family live through this sheltered life I am living because of Trichotillomania.

Trichsters often feel uncared for and unworthy. For example, I’ve always prayed to be healed from Trichotillomania and for many years I rationalized the fact God has not answered my prayer by things such as, “May be He is testing my faith,” or, “What if He wants me to be more patient?”, or, “What if Trichotillomania is some kind of a blessing?”, or, “May be God doesn’t heal nowadays as He did in the Gospel times.” But when I read the Bible I can't help but notice that most of Jesus’ healing have the same pattern…immediately:

Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.” Mark 1:42
Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.” Mark 5:29
Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old).” Mark 5:42
Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.” Mark 10:52
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak.” Luke 1:64

So when I read those verses I had to ask myself, “Why doesn't Jesus heal me like the Bible says?" There are no ‘if’s or ‘but’s here. There aren't those thoughts we often have such as ‘more patient’, ‘disease is a blessing’, ‘pain is God’s will for our lives’…” I wondered, "Why does it look and work so differently for me?" Then I usually comforted myself by thinking, "May be it is not just me; may be it is like this for all of us." Then one day someone told me about the miraculous healing of their pet by God and I immediately felt that God cares about their pet more than He does about me. I had never felt as worthless as in that moment. Then I asked, “How much does an animal understand about ‘faith’, ‘patient’, 'pain' and 'blessings'?!” So I stopped trying to explain a God that's much wiser than I can ever fathom.

Of course Trichotillomania is like a mystery disorder that people have hard time understanding and that’s why trichsters feel very misunderstood. For example, a classmate asked me recently why do I always wear baseball caps, and I told her that’s because I have a hair pulling disorder called Trichotillomania, and she asked, “Your hair or other people’s hair?” I had to laugh when she asked this and I explained to her it is like nail biting—you don’t bite someone else’s nails.

A couple of months ago my sister asked me, “Why do you have bald spots on your head?” (I don’t understand why some people who know me very well keeps asking me this; I mean they know very well that I have Trichotillomania. It is like you need to wear hearing aids and people keep asking you, "What are those things in your ears?!") And I told her, “Because I pull my hair out.” And she answered, “People wish they have hair and you pull your hair out!” It is like saying, “You bite your nails because you don’t like having nails.” If I want to get rid of my head’s hair I would just shave it! I won't choose to have bald spots here and there! I wrote the above two examples just to show how little Trichotillomania is known. The simplest way to understand Trichotillomania is to use common sense by treating it like any other obsessive disorder.

Anyway, I hope you like the capture. Of course, it is very hard and rare for me to photograph myself and that’s why there aren’t any pictures of me on my flickr photostream. I also hate dressing formally because that means I can't wear a baseball cap which means I can't c

Quiz Bird #1 (answered)

Quiz Bird #1 (answered)

Answer 02/04/08

I think that most would agree that this is an owl so we’ll start there. Right away we can eliminate some of the more obvious ones, Snowy, Northern Hawk, Brown Hawk (soon to be added to the ABA list), Short-eared, Long-eared, Burrowing and Barn by body shape, wing length, plumage etc. Size can be difficult to judge in pictures but proportions can be helpful. The proportion of the head to the body should give us the impression of a larger bird. However, we will try to eliminate other species by other factors. The lack of “ears” is helpful but can be tricky in the field. However, its safe to say this isn’t a Screech, Oriental Scops, Flammulated, Stygian or Great Horned based on this alert quiz bird. Similarly we cannot see “eyes” on the nape getting rid of the Pygmies. Color and lack of white “eyebrows” removes Elf from the list as well. The dark face and lack of obvious large white spots on the scapulars eliminate Boreal and Northern Saw-Whet. So we’re really left with the Strix species. If this bird was only turned around this would be much easier. However, from this angle (an angle many are often seen at) we can see all we need. I meant for the irises to throw people off because it almost appears that they have some light color in them. However owl eyes are so large that if seen from the side one can see how much they stick out and, being essentially clear globes, they pick up reflections. However, this bird is obviously dark brown and the head isn’t the right proportion for Great Gray, the only one left with a light color to its irises. So we’re left with Spotted, Barred, and Mottled. Most respondents guessed either Barred or Spotted so nearly everyone was on the right track. In overall appearance Barreds are much lighter than Spotteds. The facial disks of Barreds are particularly pale as is the nape. Plus most Barreds show large pale-tipped scapulars as well as other obvious pale-tipped back and covert feathers. Our quiz bird has a dark facial disk, being about the same color as the nape and back, and dark nape and back. Also it has a series of neat white dots on the back of the head suggesting Spotted. I admit that when I posted this I hadn’t thought of Mottled and I have zero experience with them personally. Having said that, Mottled Owl is a dimorphic species with a rufescent and a brown morph. While Spotteds can be quite reddish, our quiz bird clearly isn’t. The books that I have focus on the dark facial disk of Mottleds (which doesn’t help us here) and pale white eyebrows and white frame to the facial disks as well as distinct, large white spots on the scapulars (more like Barred). The latter two characteristics do not appear on our quiz bird. I took this picture of an adult male SPOTTED OWL last summer near Cle Elum, Washington while surveying for this species. I have added another picture of this guy to my pictures. I had several answers that included a guess as to the subspecies of this bird. I have no experience with the other subspecies besides Northern so I won’t act the expert on this in the slightest. However, what I have gleaned from the books that I have is that the Mexican subspecies can, for the most part, be reliably ID’d from the western birds due to mainly the amount of white in the plumage (not to mention range). However, I don’t know of any reliable characteristics, visually at least, to distinguish the Northerns from the Californians. If you know of any, I’d be interested. As an added note we can age this bird as an adult by the coloration on the rectrice tips. The brown markings within the last white stripe on the tip as well as the rounded ends of the rectrices tell us that this is an adult. If they were pointed and clear white this would be a first year bird. As another note, I’m not going to be too picky about this but just make sure your answers are very clear. I had a few that said something like “ Its probably a Spotted but it still might be a Barred.” I would say that that makes their answer “Spotted Owl” but you see my confusion? I just want to make sure I give credit where its due. In addition, this species was easy in terms of subspecies name (Northern Spotted Owl is obviously a Spotted Owl) but be careful with those subspecies names that are not the ABA accepted common name (i.e. Bewick’s Swan, Common Gull). Please check the quiz rules. Thanks to all who responded to this first quiz. I ended up receiving a total of 20 responses to the quiz! Great for the first time out.

Dunnock

Dunnock

At first glance the Dunnock looks like a dull sleek sparrow. On closer inspection it is quite attractive with its blue-grey head and breast, light and dark brown streaky back, brown streaked flanks and pink legs. The black bill is finer than that of a sparrow, because it feeds mainly on insects and not seed.
